Digneo: Put It On Reddit And Podcasts, Not Your Blog

An SEO who ran content at Time Doctor describes the shift plainly: the brand-building topics do not belong on your own blog any more.

From Greg Digneo on the Unscripted SEO Podcast · 5 min read

A note on this piece. Our content plan originally framed this as Greg Digneo comparing the return on an hour of content optimisation against an hour recording as a podcast guest. He makes no such comparison anywhere in the interview, and we are not going to invent one for him. What he does say is narrower and, we think, more interesting — so that is what this article covers.

Greg Digneo runs Content Guppy and previously ran content at Time Doctor. Talking to host Jeremy Rivera on the Unscripted SEO Podcast about the business side of SEO, he described a change in where he would now put the work.

What Digneo Actually Said

A side-by-side panel weighing publishing a brand topic on your own blog against placing it on Reddit, podcasts and other publications.

“I used to think — we used to do that for the branding purposes at Time Doctor as well. We used to be like, hey, we’re gonna do all things remote work. Now though, I think the shift is we’re going to be on Reddit, right? We’re not going to worry about that stuff on our blog. We’re going to put that stuff on Reddit. We’re going to put that stuff on other publications. We’re going to talk about that in podcasts. We’re going to talk about that in YouTube channels, things like that. We’re going to talk about that with some sort of PR play, like those kinds of things. And that’s how we’ll cover that. And that’s how you’ll get your brand out there.”

— Greg Digneo, Content Guppy

The specific move is worth isolating. Time Doctor is a time-tracking product; “all things remote work” was the broad topical territory around it. The old play was to own that territory on the company blog. The new play is to be present in that territory on other people’s property, and to let the blog do a narrower job.

He is not saying the blog is dead. He is saying it stopped being the right place for the top-of-funnel topical work — which is precisely the content most exposed to AI answers and most expensive to defend.

Where The Blog Still Wins

Greg is explicit about what remains on your own site, and it is the commercial end:

“And then when it’s like, hey, best remote work software or something like that — that’s where your brand is. And then that all focuses back into that one big cohesiveness of… that is SEO. It’s no longer like you said, hey, website link. You’re in B2B SaaS, right? You’re on Reddit. You’re answering questions on LinkedIn. And you have your website. And then you’re doing your offsite SEO on other sites. And not in so much the form of guest posts, but in the form of… Top 10 software tools, Remote software tools, Time Doctor on all those posts.”

— Greg Digneo, Content Guppy

“Not in so much the form of guest posts” is the sentence that separates this from the last decade of link building. The target is not a placed article you wrote. It is being named in the listicle someone else wrote — appearing on the roundups that buyers and models both consult.

He adds a candid aside about what that is worth: “not to totally give away the secret sauce here, but no matter how much you have to pay for it, it’s almost always worth it.” And he cites a single placement that was, last he knew, driving 110 trials a month — “just from that one article, that one link.”

Why Podcasts Sit Naturally In That List

A distribution map showing one expert argument placed across Reddit, podcasts, YouTube and third-party publications.

Our argument from here, not Greg’s. He lists podcasts among the surfaces; he does not single them out.

Look at what the surfaces on his list have in common. Reddit, other publications, podcasts, YouTube, PR — every one requires a human to say something a non-expert could not have said, in a venue where an audience already exists and where the venue’s owner, not you, controls admission.

Of those, a podcast has the lowest production cost per unit of output for the person with the expertise. Reddit demands sustained daily presence to earn standing. A YouTube channel is a permanent production commitment. A PR pitch competes for scarce editorial attention. A podcast appearance costs the expert forty-five minutes and returns an episode page, a transcript, clips, show notes and platform listings — the durable text assets that make the argument findable later.

It also produces the exact artefact Greg’s listicle strategy needs. Being named in “top 10 remote work software” requires that somebody researching the category encounters you as a credible option. An hour of you explaining your view of the category, published under a third party’s name, is unusually good raw material for that.

Where The Break-Even Sits For Your Team

Practitioner guidance.

The honest version of the trade is not guesting versus optimisation — it is what your scarcest person should spend an hour on. For most small teams that person is the founder or the senior practitioner, and the question is whether their hour goes into work that only they can do.

Three conditions that push the answer toward off-site placement:

  • Your category has roundups. If “best X for Y” lists exist and drive real evaluation, presence on other people’s properties is directly commercial, not brand-adjacent.
  • Your differentiation is a point of view. If what makes you different is a defensible opinion rather than a feature table, it needs a venue with an audience and a host, not a blog post nobody arrives at.
  • Your blog is already losing top-of-funnel clicks. If informational rankings are holding while traffic falls, you are defending ground that no longer pays.

The inverse also holds. If you have a live, converting commercial page that is under-optimised, fix that first — there is no visibility strategy that outperforms a page which already gets qualified traffic and fails to convert it.
